Cavagnino & Gatti: Company Profile and Distinctive Identity
Origins and history
Cavagnino & Gatti was established in Canelli in 1955, when Pietro Cavagnino and Antonio Gatti founded a small workshop dedicated to the design and construction of semi-automatic machinery to support wineries in the bottling process.
Those were pioneering years: Canelli was the Italian capital of wine, and the wine-making mechanical sector was rapidly expanding, driving an increasing demand for automated packaging solutions. In 1956, Pietro Cavagnino and Antonio Gatti designed and built their first labelling machine, which proudly bore their name: Cavagnino & Gatti.
The machine was entirely handcrafted: part of the mechanical transmission was recovered from an American military vehicle, and the cast-iron motor carried the Ansaldo trademark. This extraordinary machine is still preserved today and displayed at the entrance of the company, symbolizing the origins of Cavagnino & Gatti’s engineering heritage.
Company philosophy
Continuity over time is the cornerstone of Cavagnino & Gatti’s philosophy. An unmatched experience built over more than 70 years of activity allows the company to design reliable, tailor-made labelling machines and to guarantee long-term availability of spare parts and technical assistance.
Each Cavagnino & Gatti labelling machine is custom designed according to the specific needs of the customer. Every project is developed by carefully listening to real production requirements. Full control of the manufacturing process enables extensive customization and the creation of unique solutions, engineered case by case.
Cavagnino & Gatti machines are conceived to solve concrete production challenges, improve labelling efficiency, adapt to any format and material, and enhance overall performance. Durability is a key value: the average lifespan of a Cavagnino & Gatti labelling machine can exceed 30 years, with the possibility of upgrades and adaptations over time.
Outstanding mechanical and design expertise, detailed customization, deep knowledge of the sector and continuous innovation allow Cavagnino & Gatti solutions to achieve top-level efficiency, versatility and labelling quality.
Target sectors and applications
Born and developed in Canelli, one of the world’s most important hubs for wine-industry mechanics and technology, Cavagnino & Gatti specializes in the design and manufacture of wet-glue and self-adhesive labelling machines for bottles of all sizes and formats, including still wines, sparkling wines, vermouths and spirits.
Over the years, the company has expanded its expertise into a wide range of sectors, such as:
- Beer
- Oil and vinegar
- Soft drinks, juices and water
- Food jars and containers
- Chemical and cosmetic products
Cavagnino & Gatti also develop dedicated technologies for special applications and complex packaging shapes. Notable examples include labelling machines for egg containers, cardboard tubes for premium spirits, plastic bottles used for chocolates, powdered coffee packages and bag-in-box wine containers for the application of DOCG marks.
Technological challenges and innovation
The long history of Cavagnino & Gatti demonstrates the company’s ability to anticipate market needs and address evolving technological challenges.
Today, Cavagnino & Gatti remains a key player in the field of precision labelling machinery, combining experience and creativity, reliability and innovation. Continuous development focuses on optimizing application processes, increasing precision and flexibility for increasingly complex packaging, and simplifying operator intervention.

Proprietary technologies and the C&G vision system
Technological innovation has always been a core element of Cavagnino & Gatti’s identity. Over decades of experience, the company has developed a range of proprietary technologies designed to ensure maximum precision, flexibility and repeatability in labelling processes, even in the most demanding production environments.
Among these solutions, the C&G Vision System represents one of the most advanced technologies. The C&G Vision System is an integrated alignment technology based on high-resolution industrial cameras and proprietary software. The system is designed to detect and read reference points directly on the container, such as glass seams, embossing, debossing, logos, notches or printed marks, and to use them as alignment references for label applications.
By combining real-time image acquisition with electronically controlled bottle rotation platforms, the C&G Vision System ensures extremely accurate label positioning, regardless of variations in container shape, production speed or material characteristics. This allows the machine to apply labels with consistent precision, even on bottles with irregular geometries or complex decorative elements.
One of the key advantages of the C&G Vision System is its ability to adapt dynamically to production variations. Unlike traditional mechanical alignment systems, the vision-based approach automatically compensates for slight differences between containers, ensuring uniform labelling quality throughout the entire production run.
In addition to vision-based alignment, Cavagnino & Gatti machines incorporate advanced technologies such as:
- Motorized height adjustment with format recall via HMI, allowing quick and repeatable setup changes without manual intervention
- Motorized self-adhesive and wet-glue labelling stations, with electronically controlled axes and automatic positioning recall from the HMI
- Motorized infeed screw, driven by brushless motor and fully adjustable to different container formats
- Packaging quality control systems with vision cameras, for label presence, positioning and integrity inspection
- Integrated OCR reading systems, for verification of printed data, batch codes and variable information
All technologies are developed with the same guiding principles: precision, reliability, durability and customization. Each technological solution can be configured and adapted to the specific needs of the customer, ensuring optimal performance across a wide range of sectors and applications.
Through the continuous evolution of its proprietary technologies and the C&G Vision System, Cavagnino & Gatti confirms its commitment to delivering high-precision labelling solutions capable of meeting the challenges of increasingly complex and distinctive packaging.

Company structure and manufacturing approach
Cavagnino & Gatti is a family-run company with around 70 specialized employees and a consolidated supply network built on decades of collaboration.
All machines are designed and manufactured in-house, following a fully vertical production process that ensures complete control over materials, technologies, programming and components. This approach guarantees high-quality standards and the availability of original spare parts in short lead times.
The production facility is equipped with lathes, CNC machining centers and advanced machine tools for mechanical manufacturing. Labelling machines are designed using CAD/CAM systems, supported by 3D laser scanners and 3D printers, while all software is developed by internal programmers.
Looking to the future
Looking ahead, Cavagnino & Gatti will continue to build on its core values of concreteness, durability and customization, with increasing focus on automation and software development.
The company’s goal is to deliver labelling machines equipped with advanced automation that simplifies the operator’s work and minimizes the risk of errors, while preserving the robustness and reliability that have always defined Cavagnino & Gatti machines.
